I think it's usually people that know something about what's in your car and are too low-life to work and save to get it honestly. They've either seen your car at the stereo shop (may even be friends of the installer), or seen you putting your stuff in yourself, or showing it off to friends or at shows, or just heard your awesome system driving by somewhere. Hits like this are pretty targeted, though; they knew exactly where to go and what they were going to get. That's why I'm always paranoid about any of my cars. Any time I install anything in my cars, it's always in my garage, away from prying eyes. Of course, it also helps that the Z also STAYS in the garage and I live in an honest-to-goodness gated neighborhood. It's unfortunate that other honest people don't have such benefits and have to live in fear of what kind of wrong attention any mods will bring :(
